Phantom on the Scan is a new psychological horror/thriller book hitting shelves this week from Aftershock comics. Written by Cullen Bunn with art by Mark Torres this book follows Matthew “Matt” Jordan, a man with psychic abilities, who – with help from the ghost of a young boy from his past – is beginning to investigate the mysterious deaths of others who possess these same abilities across the country. When Matt reaches out to a small group of other perspective psychic individuals to express the danger he believes them to be in he witnesses something horrifying and unexpected that will undoubtedly have lasting ramifications on his mission going forward.
Torres’s art really sets the atmosphere for the book utilizing a darker/cooler color palette and use of shadows to convey a more somber tone. However, when the story calls for it Torres in able to effectively convey tension and horror through seemingly frantic sketch lines, facial expressions, and a warmer color palette that really stand in contrast with the other segments of the book.
The issue is followed by a coda featuring a series of lab reports from the Trellux Institute leaving us to wonder who this mysterious organization is and what their involvement is with these psychic phenomenon. With clever use of tension Phantom on the Scan has struck a balance between mystery and horror that will undoubtedly have readers on the edge of their seats anxiously wondering what will happen next.
